oh my fucking god. renfield is such a pathetic little wet cat. i love him so much. anyways i had a lot of fun watching this actually GFDHDFS. i mean to be fair im also kinda the target audience?? but anyways.
OKAY starting with characters: both renfield and dracula like, 100% carried. I really enjoyed how he was just. dorky the whole time while ripping off heads and murdering and. all that. WAUGH and when he was getting out and finding hobbies and all that hhrhghghhg so cute. skrungle. he may be skrungle bait but i literally DO not care. I do think he could have kept his hair fluffy though. and i may be biased because his initial look is how i dress on a daily basis but he should have kept some version of that. although i do understand the clothes change from a narrative perspective and idc the sweater is great too hearts!!! the side characters were also fun enough to watch run around but I wasn't all that invested in most of them. Rebecca especially could have used more depth she felt kinda one-note the entire time sob emoji. And i dunno how well she works as a love interest like theoretically i like the dynamic i ghink they were kinda going for? head over heels pathetic meow meow x ambitious strongheaded girl but i was Not really feeling the chemistry there sorry T_T. Ted and his mom and the crime family were pretty funny at first? tbh i thought that they were just one off side characters but then they kept showing up and like. ok i guess! I dont really like the whole crime solving cop genre? like those kinds of movies i tend to stay away from? And while i got that the main love interest was part of the police i didn’t expect it to be so integral to the plot based off of the trailers.
And i think that takes us to the next point: I think they could have probably kept the stakes and characters and everything to a smaller scale. Like I understand why they brought it larger for the climax with dracula going to take over the world with the help of the crime family but I was mostly watching for the whole supernatural interpersonal relationship killing stabbing part of the movie? and found that also like. Funnier. (like what the trailer was implying we’d get HELP.) But its okay the higher stakes give renfield an excuse to go unga bunga on more faceless npcs and spill tons of blood!! i love blood!! yippee!!
omg. and as an mcr fan i HAVE to mention the nanana montage that was fucking amazing holy shit. mcr jumpscare. i actually heard about it prior?? but i thought it was an extension of the "gerard and ray are on the fnaf soundtrack" joke that's been going around. anyways me and my friend were going absolutely apeshit in our seats when we heard the guitar like that was UNREAL. i cant believe that its actually in there it felt like watching the have sex song when it was playing over the matt smith working out scene in morbius except like in a different way because nanana actually fit pretty well HELP. i wonder if it was in there because of the spider being the danger days logo? inch resting. eight legs to the wall baby!!!
segueing into the visuals, i really loved the lighting and colors in this. Especially in dracula’s lair, the vibrant emerald-ish creepy and wet lighting contrasted with his chair with iv’s connected to it was so hrhghhgh. love.
i do have to say though im a bit disappointed how no-homoey it felt HRG. it woulda been perfect if it leaned a little more into the homoeroticism and camp and focused more on renfield + dracula instead of cops feuding with rich crime families rip. Like come on its 2023 you have dracula, my chemical romance on the soundtrack, and mention tumblr you can afford to be VERY FUCKING GAY!!!!!
okay now overall: renfield starts off great and kinda gets more eh as the plot progresses, (especially as the police drug dealer feud subplot melds into the renfield dracula plot) but it's still a lot of fun and has some great lighting and cinematogaphy choices. so all in all ithink its worth seeing!!
