this book is so stupid that it works? objectively, could have been cut down by around 200 pages. harris' prose is still quite grating at times. the melancholic overtone of clarice's time in the fbi workplace and hannibal's sister complex were some of my favorite bits i think... while the story is messy plot-wise, thematically the climax-ending is fitting; clarice chooses to rescue the monster-turned-lamb as her decision (and later subsequent rebirth), rejecting the normative fbi. the father complex overtones regarding clarice feel relatively superficial- despite hannibal's insistence on addressing them in part 6 (and the ongoing idea of clarice as her fathers daughter) it is also paul krendler who utilizes that branch of freudian reasoning to reduce clarice's character. (if you must know, clarice and hannibal to me are daughter - mother to me, with the breastfeeding imitation at the end being an symbolic ouroboros.) am i on something or onto something? no one knows!
